Using computers to produce images as visual aids in understanding complex data has played an important role in atmospheric research since the early 1960s. Under different organizational structures since 1964, software developed within a single project at NCAR has undergone an unbroken evolution in making significant contributions in the area of computer graphics tailored to research in the atmospheric sciences. This collection documents that evolution. / The materials not only document specific advances but reflect the development of a branch of computer graphics in general. The project continues to thrive, indicated by the fact that there were 4,000 unique downloads of the software in 2010. This collection offer unique documentation of a project that has had a cohesive history and record of achievement for almost fifty years. Materials include correspondence, manuals, proposals, reports, photographs, and other files documenting various aspects of computing history.

The Stephen Schneider Nuclear Winter Papers document Dr. Schneider's work in understanding the environmental impacts of a nuclear war. The collection focuses heavily on using climate models to inform the theory of nuclear winter, and offers an interesting window into science and policy. The collection consists mostly of correspondence and clippings, but includes reports, conference proceedings, and draft papers as well.

The Climate and Global Dynamics Division (CGD) Records document the Division's early days at NCAR as the Atmospheric Analysis and Prediction Division (AAP) to more recent research. Materials showcase CGD's research objectives and computer models around understanding the Earth's climate and climate change through correspondence, committee materials, presentations, formal reports, project plans, and records pertaining to the acquisition of NCAR's supercomputers.

The collection contains primarily contains correspondence, legal documents, reports, newsletters, VHS tapes and computer artifacts. / Newsletters from this collection have been digitized and are avaiable in the NCAR Library's digital repository, OpenSky.

The records of the Computing Facility Advisory Panel (CAP) primarily contains minutes, correspondence, and mail outs of work done by the Panel for meetings that spans 1964-1995. Some meetings occurred over a period of consecutive days. Included in the collection are requests for usage applications and computer time. No weeding was done on this collection.
