    NCAR Graphics and NCL Records

Using computers to produce images as visual aids in understanding complex data has played an important role in atmospheric research since the early 1960s. Under different organizational structures since 1964, software developed within a single project at NCAR has undergone an unbroken evolution in making significant contributions in the area of computer graphics tailored to research in the atmospheric sciences. This collection documents that evolution. / The materials not only document specific advances but reflect the development of a branch of computer graphics in general. The project continues to thrive, indicated by the fact that there were 4,000 unique downloads of the software in 2010. This collection offer unique documentation of a project that has had a cohesive history and record of achievement for almost fifty years. Materials include correspondence, manuals, proposals, reports, photographs, and other files documenting various aspects of computing history.

Global Atmospheric Research Programme Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) Records

The GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) was a large and complex international scientific experiment designed to gain an increased understanding of the atmosphere and causes of climatic variation and change. GATE sought to learn how cloud clusters in the tropic transformed and redistributed energy within the atmosphere, knowledge that was needed for the development of numerical models for long-range weather prediction and for assessing the long-term effects of pollutants on the atmosphere. / These materials focus primarily on NCAR's role in GATE, specifically aircraft flights and data management, but also include information about other aspects of the project. Materials include flight logs and debriefing forms, satellite imagery, correspondence, newsletters, workshop proceedings, mission reports, and photographs. / Selections from the GATE Records have been digitized and are available in the NCAR Library's digital repository, OpenSky. / The project webpage for GATE is also available: http://www.eol.ucar.edu/projects/gate/

Tropical Wind, Energy Conversion, and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE) Records

The Tropical Wind, Energy Conversion, and Reference Level Experiment, or TWERLE, was sponsored by the Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA) and designed and implemented by NCAR and the University of Wisconsin. TWERLE was an intensive program of meteorological observations made from superpressure balloons orbiting the earth at the 150mb density level. The balloons were tracked and monitored by the Nimbus-6 satellite, providing data which increased understanding of atmospheric circulation. / Crew members at three sites in the tropic (Pago Pago in the South Pacific, Ascension Island in the Atlantic, and Ghana in West Africa) each launched about 100 balloons during the summer and early fall of 1975. The launch crews consisted of about five to seven NCAR staffers. A subsequent midlatitude phase, during which balloons were launched from Christchurch, took place from November 1975 to February 1976. / The TWERLE Records include correspondence, budget information, data, reports, publications, and photographs. Files shed light on the design and logistics of the experiment. Selections from this collection are available online.
