National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Records
The National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Records document the early days of the NSBF while it was managed by NCAR. Records illuminate the logistics of conducting balloon flights abroad and at home, particularly during the Cold War era. The collection offers a window into instrumentation, modifications, and issues with balloons and electronics packages. The collection includes correspondence, memos, budgets, reports, proposals, papers, and films. Selections from this collection are available online.Document/ArchiveCollection -

Global Atmospheric Research Programme Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) Records
The GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) was a large and complex international scientific experiment designed to gain an increased understanding of the atmosphere and causes of climatic variation and change. GATE sought to learn how cloud clusters in the tropic transformed and redistributed energy within the atmosphere, knowledge that was needed for the development of numerical models for long-range weather prediction and for assessing the long-term effects of pollutants on the atmosphere. / These materials focus primarily on NCAR's role in GATE, specifically aircraft flights and data management, but also include information about other aspects of the project. Materials include flight logs and debriefing forms, satellite imagery, correspondence, newsletters, workshop proceedings, mission reports, and photographs. / Selections from the GATE Records have been digitized and are available in the NCAR Library's digital repository, OpenSky. / The project webpage for GATE is also available: http://www.eol.ucar.edu/projects/gate/Document/ArchiveCollection -

Tropical Wind, Energy Conversion, and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE) Records
The Tropical Wind, Energy Conversion, and Reference Level Experiment, or TWERLE, was sponsored by the Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA) and designed and implemented by NCAR and the University of Wisconsin. TWERLE was an intensive program of meteorological observations made from superpressure balloons orbiting the earth at the 150mb density level. The balloons were tracked and monitored by the Nimbus-6 satellite, providing data which increased understanding of atmospheric circulation. / Crew members at three sites in the tropic (Pago Pago in the South Pacific, Ascension Island in the Atlantic, and Ghana in West Africa) each launched about 100 balloons during the summer and early fall of 1975. The launch crews consisted of about five to seven NCAR staffers. A subsequent midlatitude phase, during which balloons were launched from Christchurch, took place from November 1975 to February 1976. / The TWERLE Records include correspondence, budget information, data, reports, publications, and photographs. Files shed light on the design and logistics of the experiment. Selections from this collection are available online.Document/ArchiveCollection -

Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere- Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE) Records
The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) was designed by an international group of scientists as an integral part of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Study. TOGA-COARE brought together scientists and support staff from 20 nations. The experiment combined oceanography, meteorology, and computer climate modeling to better understand the effect of tropical warm weather regions on the tropical ocean-global atmosphere system. / UCAR managed TOGA-COARE, the second largest field program since GATE, with the establishment of the TOGA-COARE International Project Office in Boulder in 1990. Over 150 UCAR/NCAR staff were involved in the project. / The TOGA-COARE Records consist of budget information, correspondence, plans, reports, protocols, ship reports, meeting minutes, and handwritten notes. Meeting minutes and correspondence offer a window into the complexities of managing and executing a massive international field project.Document/ArchiveCollection -
